Maha doctors call off strike after CM promises SIT probe in Satara doctor case

Mumbai: Doctors across Maharashtra, under the banner of Central MARD and BMC MARD (Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors), have called off their two-day statewide strike after receiving assurances from Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis regarding their key demands in connection with the Satara doctor case.

For the past three days, resident doctors across all Government and Municipal Medical Colleges in Maharashtra have been on strike, keeping only emergency medical services functional. The protest was held to demand justice for Dr *** and to demand better safety and accountability mechanisms for resident doctors across the state.

Following this, the Chief Minister met the core committee of the association at Sahayadri Guest House, Mumbai, on November 4, 2025. The meeting was attended by senior government officials, including Hon. Vice Chancellor and Director of DMER, Dr Ajay Chandanwale.

During the meeting, the government assured that a high-level SIT would be formed under the leadership of a retired judge to conduct a fair and comprehensive investigation into the Dr **** case. The government also agreed that the two days of strike will be marked as “on duty” for resident doctors, ensuring no academic or administrative penalties. In addition, appropriate compensation mechanisms will be implemented for both Municipal and Government Medical Colleges, ensuring that resident doctors do not face any financial deductions due to their participation in the agitation.

Chief Minister of Maharashtra and the Medical Education Department Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Hasan Mushrif Saheb and Dr Ajay Chandanwale Sir, Director DMER & Vice Chancellor MUHS, for acknowledging the genuine concerns of the medical fraternity and taking prompt action to ensure justice and systemic reform. Central MARD & BMC MARD also extend heartfelt appreciation to all resident doctors, medical teachers, and supporting staff who stood united and conducted the strike with dignity and discipline, keeping patient safety as the topmost priority," stated the press release.

With the government’s assurance to fulfil the demands in a time-bound manner, Central MARD & BMC MARD have called off the strike, and all resident doctors will resume duties with immediate effect.

The doctors who were present in the meeting to discuss with the CM include Dr Sachin Patil (President Central MARD), Dr Atharva Shinde (Spokesperson Central MARD), Dr Ishwari Somvanshi (LR Central MARD), Dr Rakesh Kumar Routu, Dr Chinmay Kelkar (BMC MARD President) and Dr Ayushi Bafna (BMC MARD).

Medical Dialogues has been extensively reporting the details surrounding the doctor’s death and her work-related stress. The woman doctor working at a Phaltan Sub-District Hospital in Maharashtra’s Satara district allegedly died by suicide, leaving a note on her palm, accusing a police officer and a software engineer of rape and mental harassment. Both accused were arrested in connection with the case.

The doctor, hailing from Beed district in the Marathwada region of central Maharashtra and posted at a government hospital in Satara district, was found hanging in a hotel room in Phaltan town on Thursday night. In the suicide note written on her palm, she alleged that police sub-inspector Badane raped her on multiple occasions, while Bankar, a software engineer, mentally harassed her.
