Maharashtra Medical Council gets 5 new members, 1 post remains vacant

Maharashtra Medical Council
Mumbai: The Maharashtra government on Saturday notified the nomination of five members to the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC), paving the way for the reconstitution of the council. However, one of the four ex officio member positions remains vacant.
According to the news reports, the nominated members are Dr Ajay Keni, Dr Rahul Kulkarni, Dr Prashant Chaudhary, Dr Rajiv Yerawadekar and Dr Chandrashekhar Gillurkar.

Speaking to TOI, Dr Santosh Kadam, who was one of the nine members elected to MMC in April, said the council can only be formed once all the posts are filled. “Until the council is formed, it will continue to function as it did even after the elections,” he said.
The Maharashtra Medical Council has been functioning under state-appointed administrators since August 2022, after the tenure of the previous elected body ended.
The latest nominations are expected to bring the council closer to being fully constituted, although the vacancy among the ex-officio members continues to delay the process.
Once the council is constituted, the elected members are expected to raise concerns over the registration of homoeopaths with the Maharashtra Medical Council, reports The Daily.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has urged the Maharashtra Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, to immediately roll back the proposed registration of Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology (CCMP) certified BHMS practitioners with the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC), while extending full support to the Central Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) statewide withdrawal of routine medical services from August 5, 2026. In a letter dated August 5, 2026, addressed to the Chief Minister at Mantralaya, Mumbai, FAIMA stated its firm support for the decision of the Central Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) to proceed with a statewide withdrawal of routine medical services.
