Mangaluru orthopaedic surgeon Dr Umananda Mallya passes away at 74

Veteran Orthopedic Specialist Dr. Umananda Mallya No More
Mangaluru: Dr. Umananda Mallya, one of Mangaluru's most respected orthopaedic surgeons, passed away on July 4 after a period of illness at a private hospital in the city. He was 74.
Dr. Mallya was widely regarded as one of the finest orthopaedic specialists in the region. He completed his MBBS, Diploma in Orthopaedics (D.Ortho), and Master of Surgery (MS) in Orthopaedics from Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Mangaluru. He later served as the Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at the KMC Hospital located in Attavar.

Beyond his exemplary medical career, Dr. Mallya was deeply rooted in spiritual and social services, notably dedicating many years of devotion at the Shree Venkataramana Temple in Car Street, Mangaluru, where he was revered as one of the senior-most volunteers. He also took up leadership roles in cultural and religious festivities, serving as the president of the Acharya Matha Sharada Mahotsava Samiti, reports Megamedia News.
Dr. Mallya was known for treating patients with patience and empathy, often providing free medical care to those who could not afford treatment. His generosity and empathy earned him immense respect. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
The news of his passing has evoked heartfelt condolences from the medical fraternity. In a Facebook post, Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru, expressed its deepest condolences.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that Dr. Eugene Braunwald, a legendary cardiologist, passed away on April 22, 2026, at the age of 96. Recognised for his groundbreaking work in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and other specialties, he transformed the understanding of heart disease over a career spanning more than seven decades. Dr Braunwald, a long-time member of the ACC and scholar, leader and mentor, has often been referred to as the father of modern cardiology.
