Meghalaya-based doctor allegedly thrashed by angry mob for attempting extortion

Tura: In a shocking incident, a doctor was brutally thrashed by angry villagers of Rongram, about 13 km from Tura town, for allegedly trying to extort money from shop owners near the market on Tuesday evening.

The incident took place at around 7 pm when the doctor and his aides visited the market to extort money from a meat owner.

According to the police, the doctor and his aides threatened to assault the meat vendors with a machete. This happened after he and his aides demanded money from the vendor.

Following this, the doctor also threatened others present at the scene. This prompted the mob of villagers to take action and they thrashed the doctor and his aids on the spot. Meanwhile, the three aids fled the scene in fear and left the doctor in the hands of the angry villagers.

It came to light that the doctor and his aid reached the Rongram market to collect money from a vegetable vendor. The doctor claimed that the vendor was doing business on the land that belonged to him. Due to this, the doctor demanded money from the vendor.

The doctor also demanded money from other shopkeepers claiming he owned the land they had set up stalls in the Rongram market.

The vegetable vendors paid him the extortion money, but the meat vendor refused to give in, which resulted in chaos at the market.

As per a media report in India Today, the enraged crowd destroyed the doctor's car by lifting it off the road. They further dumped the car in the Ganol river.

Upon learning of the incident, a police team of Rongram reached the spot and somehow managed to save the doctor from further harm. Agitated residents of Rongram later surrounded the police station and demanded that the doctor be handed over to them for instant punishment.
