Nagpur doctor gets extortion call demanding Rs 40 lakh, 2 arrested
Nagpur: The Anti Extortion Cell of Nagpur Crime Branch arrested two persons for allegedly seeking Rs 40 lakh as extortion from a doctor, an official said on Sunday.

“They purchased a mobile from a youth and inserted a SIM card to target doctors with extortion calls. On May 15, they called the victim and sought Rs 40 lakh. The doctor approached police, which gave him protection,” he said.
The two were arrested on Saturday, he added.
As per a media report in Nagpur Today, the doctor who runs the renowned Dadasaheb Lanjewar Hospital in Sriman Complex, Janata Chowk, was demanded Rs 40 lakh extortion by the accused. The threatening call came on May 15 at approximately 4:30 pm. The two spoke in Hindi and warned Dr Lanjewar that failure to comply with the demand would lead to dire consequences.
The doctor filed a complaint with the Sitabuldi police and the police have initiated an investigation into the matter. However, the ordeal did not end there for the doctor. On May 21, he received yet another call from the same individual, reiterating the demand for Rs 40 lakh and issuing threats to his life. To make an impact, they captured a picture of his house and forwarded it to his number.
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that in an alleged fraud case, the Shivaji Park Police had booked two men for cheating a Dadar-based doctor and extorting Rs 1.5 lakhs from him by claiming to be officials of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The duo, pretending to be BMC officials, fraudulently told the doctor that he had done illegal renovation at his house, and they took the money from him by threatening to take action against him for the illegal construction.
