New Delhi: Casualty Resident doctor attacked at DDU hospital, forearm injured

New Delhi: In a shocking case of violence against medical professionals, a female doctor on duty in the casualty department of Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital was allegedly verbally and physically assaulted by a patient's attendant, reportedly a foreign national under the influence of drugs.

The attendant allegedly pulled the doctor’s clothes, causing an injury to her forearm, and leaving a bruise where she had worn her watch. Shockingly, security guards and the duty police officer present at the spot did not intervene.

The incident occurred on the evening of November 1, 2025, when the attendant brought a patient to the hospital’s casualty department. A video of the incident went viral on social media, showing the woman fleeing the hospital after the assault, before the PCR team arrived.

The incident has caused severe mental trauma to the resident doctor and once again highlighted the lack of safety and accountability for healthcare workers on duty.

Condemning the attack, the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) demanded strict enforcement of laws to ensure zero tolerance toward any kind of violence against healthcare professionals. The association also called for action against those who failed to act during the incident. FAIMA said it is unacceptable that doctors trying to save lives are left unprotected and vulnerable to such violent acts.

Speaking to Medical Dialogues, FAIMA Patron Dr Sandeep Dagar said, “The patient was cooperative, but the attendant was under the influence of drugs and was hyper from the beginning. She had earlier hit the doctor with a wheelchair and kept abusing and creating chaos in the casualty ward for nearly half an hour. The doctor tried to ignore her to avoid confrontation, but the attendant continued misbehaving and later fled before the PCR team arrived.”

"This incident must serve as a wake-up call — hospitals are places of healing, not battlefields for healthcare workers. There must be zero tolerance for violence against doctors. Safety of healthcare workers is non-negotiable, and strict laws with prompt enforcement are the need of the hour to prevent such disgraceful incidents in the future. FAIMA stands firmly with the victim resident doctor and urges higher authorities, the Hon’ble Supreme Court, and the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) to bring strict laws ensuring zero tolerance for violence against healthcare workers," said the association in a press note.
