Odisha surgeon arrested for accepting Rs 6000 bribe for performing hydrocele surgery
Bhubaneswar: In a crackdown against bribery activities in Odisha, a surgeon at Jharsuguda District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) was caught red-handed by the state vigilance department while accepting a bribe of Rs 6,000 from a patient for conducting a hydrocele surgery.
The surgeon was accused of demanding a bribe from a patient in exchange for a procedure that is usually offered free of cost in government hospitals across the state. Hence, the vigilance officials apprehended the surgeon during the act under sections 7 P.C. (Amendment) Act, 2018.
As per a Pragativadi news report, the accused was nabbed on Friday following a planned trap set by the team of the state vigilance department after they received a complaint from the patient about the bribery allegations against the accused.
According to the complainant, the doctor asked him to pay a bribe of Rs 6,000 for the operation but the complaint being a poor villager requested the doctor to conduct the surgery free of cost. However, the doctor refused to do so.
The team apprehended the accused while he was caught in the act of demanding and accepting the bribe. They successfully retrieved and confiscated the entire amount of the bribe from his possession.
Following the arrest, the team are currently conducting simultaneous searches at the doctor's rented residential house in Beheramal, Jharsuguda, his house in his native village Angargadia, Industrial Area, Balasore, and his office chamber inside DHH Jharsuguda.
The case is currently under investigation to recover more bribe money if found at the residences of the doctor.
