Odisha to Recruit 5822 Doctors Soon: Minister Mukesh Mahaling
Pune's Maternity Hospitals Strain Under Lack of Doctors,
Bhubaneswar: During a session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly, Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling announced that the State Government has directed the Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) to begin the recruitment process for 5,822 doctors. This initiative aims to address the growing shortage of medical professionals in Odisha and strengthen the state's healthcare services.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that to address the ongoing shortage of doctors in government hospitals, the Odisha Cabinet has announced to send a requisition to the Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) for the recruitment of over 5,000 medical officers including 124 dentists, without delay.
The issue of inadequate healthcare services was highlighted during the legislative session by MLA Upasna Mohapatra, who raised concerns about the condition of healthcare facilities in her constituency, Brahmagiri. She highlighted the struggles of the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Rebana Nuagaon, which is currently operating with just a temporary Medical Superintendent.
Moreover, she pointed out that the Khajuria Primary Health Centre is functioning without a permanent doctor, further exacerbating the healthcare challenges faced by residents. The MLA sought clarification from the Health Minister on how the government plans to address these pressing issues and improve healthcare services in rural areas.
In response to the query, Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling stated that Odisha is experiencing a significant shortfall in its healthcare workforce. More than 6,700 doctor positions are vacant out of the approved total of 19,984 posts.
According to Sabad English, to bridge this gap, OPSC will soon release advertisements to recruit 5,822 doctors, following the directive of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Mahaling stated. He added this recruitment drive would help alleviate the Doctor shortage in hospitals across the state.

The recruitment of new doctors is expected to alleviate the burden on the existing medical staff, improve hospital services, and ensure that health centres across the state are adequately staffed.
