On-duty doctor allegedly thrashed by patient's kin at Bhima Bhoi Medical College
Balangir: Chaos erupted at Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital (BBMCH) in Balangir district after a doctor was allegedly thrashed by the attendants of a patient who died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
According to the family members of the patient, the on-duty doctor was allegedly found in an intoxicated state and took three hours to attend to the patient before he passed away at the hospital.
Accusing the doctor of medical negligence, the attendants claimed that they were waiting for three hours for a doctor to attend to their patient, whose health condition was worsening. However, the doctor arrived at 11 pm and declared the patient dead.
When the attendants asked the doctor about his whereabouts and why he did not attend to the patient, the doctor clarified that he was on duty in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This led to a disagreement, which escalated to the point where one of the attendants physically attacked the doctor and thrashed him.

In response to the accusations, the superintendent of the medical college hospital, Dr Manasee Panda ordered an inquiry into the case. "A ten-member team of doctors will investigate the allegation. If the allegations are proven, action will be taken against the erring doctor," she added, reports Ommcom News.
The incident took place on Monday after a man from the Kandhapalipara area in the district was admitted to the state-run medical facility at around 5 pm. He had severe abdominal pain with liver ailment. The doctor on the round told the attendants that he had been administered saline and an injection. However, he started complaining of severe pain around 8 pm.
When the attendants asked about the presence of doctors, the nurse informed them that there were no doctors available. Despite waiting for three hours in the hope of seeing a doctor, the patient sadly passed away.
Speaking to Ommcom News, a relative of the deceased said, “We admitted him in the evening. The rounding doctors attended to him and prescribed some medicines. Later, no doctor came to him till 11 pm even as his health condition deteriorated. The doctor in question came after 11 pm in an inebriated condition."
“When I asked why he came late, he replied that he was on duty inside ICU. The doctor was in an inebriated condition and argued with us as we asked him the reason for not attending our patient for three hours, ” the relative added.
Meanwhile, the concerned doctor denied the allegations labelled against him by the family members of the deceased.
