Sikkim Police Arrest Two After Doctor Manhandled

Gyalshing: In a recent case of violence against medical professionals, two individuals were arrested for allegedly assaulting an on-duty doctor at the Dentam Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Gyalshing district on the evening of September 5.

According to the police, the incident occurred around 8 p.m. on September 5 when an injured patient was brought to the PHC for emergency treatment. After an initial examination, the doctor referred the patient to the Gyalshing District Hospital for further treatment. Following the referral, two attendants suspected of being under the influence of alcohol reportedly became aggressive. They allegedly verbally abused the doctor and physically pushed him, causing a disruption inside the health facility.

Dentam police station has registered a case against the accused persons under relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and station house officer Aita Hang Subba has taken up the case for investigation, informed Gyalshing SP Tshering Sherpa, reports the Sikkim Express.

Speaking to India Today North East, he said, "The doctor was manhandled by two patient attendants, allegedly under the influence of alcohol. They verbally abused him and physically manhandled him."

The two accused are currently in police custody and being interrogated as part of the ongoing investigation.

The assault has sparked widespread concern among the medical community in Sikkim, with doctors across the state condemning the incident and demanding stronger protection measures for healthcare workers, particularly those serving in remote and rural areas.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that in a shocking case of violence against medical professionals, a medical officer at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Kochchur, Sikar, was allegedly slapped by an ASHA worker. The health department has ordered an inquiry, and the accused has been arrested.
