Padma Shri Prof Dr BKS Sanjay honoured with Prof TP Shrivastava Oration

Varanasi: The Varanasi Orthopaedic Association has honoured Padma Shri awardee Prof. Dr BKS Sanjay, President of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS Guwahati), with the esteemed Prof. T. P. Shrivastava Oration in acknowledgement of his remarkable contributions in the field of orthopaedics, medical teaching, public health initiatives, and social welfare.
The associationr ecognised not only his professional excellence but also his sustained dedication towards societal well-being and the growth of orthopaedic research and practice. The oration was presented during a formal ceremony held in Varanasi on January 14, 2026.
The certificate stated, “Prof. Dr. B. K. S. Sanjay is one of India's most distinguished orthopaedic surgeons, a Padma Shri awardee and a Guinness World Record holder, Founder President of Uttaranchal Chapter of Indian Orthopaedic Association, whose professional journey exemplifies excellence in clinical care, academics, and societal engagement. An eminent academician, author, poet, and inspiring orator, road safety activist, and social worker has consistently demonstrated that the true scope of medicine extends far beyond the operation theatre.”
“For over two and a half decades, Prof. Dr Sanjay has been a relentless road safety crusader and social worker, dedicating himself to injury prevention, public awareness, and behavioural change. Through sustained national campaigns, scholarly publications, lectures, and public outreach, he has played a pivotal role in addressing road traffic injuries as a major yet preventable public health challenge in India,” it added.
Moreover, it stated, "His work reflects a rare synthesis of scientific rigour, human compassion, ethical leadership, and civic responsibility. Whether as a clinician, teacher, reformer, or advocate, Prof. Dr. Sanjay has inspired generations of healthcare professionals to serve society with integrity and purpose."
Dr. Bhupendra Kumar Singh Sanjay, born on 31 August 1956 in Saidnagar, a small village in Jalaun, Uttar Pradesh, displayed brilliance in academics from an early age.
Dr. Sanjay completed his MBBS from GSBM Medical College, Kanpur, in 1980. He later served in some of the country’s most reputed institutions, including PGI Chandigarh and Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi. Over the years, he earned fellowships from several countries, such as Japan, the USA, Russia, Australia, and Sweden, continually enhancing his expertise. His research papers have been published in prestigious international journals, and he has delivered guest lectures across the globe.
In recognition of his exemplary contribution to medicine, the Government of India conferred upon him the Padma Shri, one of the nation’s highest civilian honours. His pioneering work in surgery has earned him multiple accolades, including entries in the Limca Book of Records and the Guinness World Records. He also holds a place in the India Book of Records for his social achievements.
Sanchari Chattopadhyay has pursued her M.A in English and Culture Studies from the University of Burdwan, West Bengal. She likes observing cultural specificities and exploring new places.
