Paediatrician assault triggers statewide outrage, doctors seek tougher punishment for violence
Hyderabad: The medical fraternity in Telangana have expressed strong concern and condemnation over the recent assault on a paediatrician by a patient's relative at a private hospital in Nirmal.
Medical Dialogues recently reported that the paediatrician was allegedly attacked on Thursday night following a dispute over medical expenses at his hospital. What began as an argument with hospital staff reportedly escalated into violence, with the relatives physically attacking the doctor. In response, doctors from private hospitals and nursing homes staged a protest, taking out a rally through the town before staging a sit-in at Jayashankar Chowrasta.
Raising concern over rising attacks on doctors, Telangana Senior Residents Doctors Association (T-SRDA), in a press release, stated that preliminary reports indicate that the incident arose following a disagreement related to billing, which unfortunately escalated into an act of physical violence by a group of attendants. During the episode, both the treating doctor and hospital personnel were subjected to assault and intimidation. Such incidents are highly distressing and reflect a growing threat to the safety of healthcare providers, said the association.

"Doctors and healthcare workers function in high-pressure environments, often dealing with critically ill patients and emotionally strained families. Acts of violence not only jeopardize the well-being of medical staff but also compromise patient care and disrupt the functioning of healthcare facilities," mentioned the press release.
Following this, T-SRDA called for prompt investigation and identification of all individuals involved, strict enforcement of legal provisions against those responsible and strengthening of security arrangements in hospitals and clinical settings. Further it also called for adoption of effective measures and policies to curb violence against healthcare professionals.
"T-SRDA extends its full support to Dr *** and the medical community in Nirmal. We call upon the authorities to ensure timely action and to reinforce mechanisms that safeguard healthcare workers across the state. Ensuring the safety of doctors is essential for a functional healthcare system. A secure healthcare environment benefits both providers and patients," added the association's statement.
Similarly, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Telangana also criticised the alleged attack on the doctor.
In a formal representation to all the local branches of IMA Telangana state, the association requested that all branches treat this matter with utmost urgency and seriousness and extend solidarity to the doctor.
"This shocking and unfortunate incident occurred on the night of 26th March 2026, when a post-discharge patient’s attendant demanded an unreasonable increase in the bill beyond the amount already paid for reimbursement. The situation escalated into a heated argument, ultimately resulting in physical violence against the doctor and hospital staff. Such acts are highly condemnable and pose a serious threat to the safety, dignity, and morale of the medical fraternity," IMA Telangana said.
In this regard, the association requested that all IMA Local Branches strongly condemn this heinous act of violence against the doctors by wearing black badges to protest on Saturday, 28th March 2026.
"IMA Telangana State demands strict and immediate action against the culprits and enhance the punishment for violence against healthcare professionals from 3 years to 7 years of imprisonment, thereby ensuring better safety, security, and protection for all healthcare professionals," the representation added.
