PG Medico Doctor Death Case: CBI uncovers massive bribery, illegal medicine racket at RG Kar Medical College
Kolkata: In its ongoing investigation in connection with the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College Hospital in Kolkata, the CBI has uncovered a massive intra-state racket that was operating in the hospital for years.
During the investigation, the agency found that a massive racket involving bribes for transfer postings and an illegal medical syndicate had been in operation for several years, with connections to other state-run medical colleges.
The hospital where the 31-year-old junior doctor was raped and murdered on August 9 hosted this racket as the CBI discovered that medicines worth crores of rupees, purchased by the state government, were diverted to private medical stores through this illicit network.

As per a TNIE news report, several doctors are also alleged to be involved with the racket as the agency investigation hinted at the involvement of senior state government officials in the scandal. As a result, they are searching for other doctors and people involved in this racket.
A senior CBI officer told the Daily, "We have come to know that a racket of doctors and the administration was involved in the transfer posting system of doctors in lieu of money. Those doctors who want to be transferred to medical colleges of their own choice were asked to shell out around Rs 20- Rs 30 lakh and needed to provide it to the racketeers to get themselves posted in those colleges."
According to sources within the Central Bureau of Investigation, it is suggested that the victim, who had raised her voice against these unethical practices in multiple forums, might have been specifically targeted in relation to her subsequent rape and murder.
"This has irked the victim greatly and she protested vehemently against this illegal system in various forums," said the CBI official.
Meanwhile, the CBI team investigating the case on Sunday examined and conducted 3D laser mapping in the emergency ward of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. According to sources, the CBI also conducted psychological testing of the main accused in the case.
According to ANI sources, a psychologist from the CBI team reached Kolkata on Saturday to assist the investigation team.
The rape and murder of the trainee doctor have sparked nationwide outrage, drawing responses from various sectors.
In Kolkata, junior doctors and students continue to protest at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
On August 9, a postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at RG Kar Medical College, triggering massive strikes and protests from the medical community.
On August 14, the protest site and hospital campus at RG Kar were vandalized by a mob, leading to a police intervention.
To maintain law and order, Kolkata police have imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (formerly Section 144 of the CrPC), around the Medical College and Hospital for seven days, effective for seven days from Sunday (August 18) to Saturday (August 24).
