PG Medico rape-murder case: NHRC notice to Bengal Govt, Police Chief; NCW team visits RG Kar Medical College
Kolkata: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that a postgraduate respiratory medicine medico was raped and murdered in the Seminar Hall of the Kolkata’s state-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Reportedly, the body of the deceased bore scratch marks, indicating that there was some struggle at the time of the incident. The family has reportedly alleged that the victim was raped and murdered.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim. Accordingly, it has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, West Bengal calling for a detailed report in the matter within two weeks.
According to the PTI report, a two-member team from the National Commission for Women (NCW) visited the seminar hall of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Tuesday morning, where a female doctor was recently raped and murdered.
The report is expected to include the present status of the investigation being conducted by the police and action taken against the responsible persons as well as compensation if any, paid to the next of kin of the deceased. The Commission would also like to know about the steps taken/ proposed by the authorities to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
The two-member team led by Delina Khongdup went to meet the investigating officers at Kolkata Police’s headquarters at Lalbazar after reaching the city, before going to the victim’s Panihati residence to meet the parents.
Khongdup described the crime as “heinous” and “very unfortunate incident”, news agency PTI reported.
The body of the woman doctor was discovered in a seminar hall at the hospital last Friday, and a civic volunteer was arrested on Saturday in connection with the case.
