Prof Datteswar Hota takes charge as first vice-chancellor of Odisha University of Health Sciences

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Governor and Chancellor of Universities Ganeshi Lal has appointed Prof Datteswar Hota as the first Vice Chancellor of Odisha University of Health Sciences (OUHS), Bhubaneswar, for a period of one year.

A notification from the Office of the Chancellor of the University stated that Governor Ganeshi Lal, who is also the Chancellor of universities in the state, appointed Prof Hota by exercising his power conferred under Sub-Section (7) of Section 9 of Odisha University of Health Sciences Act, 2021, reports the Odishabytes.

The appointment will be effective from the date he assumes charge as such or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Dr Hota served as dean and principal in charge of SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack. He was also head of the department of urology in SCB MCH, Cuttack, for a brief period. He was also appointed as the officer on special duty for Odisha University of Health Sciences, Bhubaneswar, to look after the initial functioning of the university.

He completed his MBBS and MS (Surgery) from SCB Medical College in 1983 and 1986, respectively. In addition, he completed his M.Ch in Urology in 1994 from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported about the Odisha Health University, which had finally taken its shape with the announcement of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik about the establishment of a health university in the state on the occasion of the 107th birth anniversary of legendary politician Biju Patnaik after 18 years of the long wait.

The move aims to strengthen medical education under one roof and ensure uniformity in various academic programs in medical and allied subjects in the state.

All the medical and allied health science colleges and institutions will stand affiliated with the Odisha University of Health Sciences from the 2023-24 academic session, a notification issued by the Health and Family Welfare Department said.

All colleges offering undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses in health sciences, including modern medicine, ayurveda, homeopathy, nursing, pharmacy and physiotherapy, will now come under the ambit of the varsity from the 2023-24 academic session, an official said.
