Renowned Psychiatrist, Former Odisha DMET Dr Gopal Kar Passes Away at 80
Bhubaneswar: Dr. Gopal Kar, a distinguished psychiatrist and professor known for his contributions to mental health in Odisha, passed away at his residence in Cuttack on Sunday at the age of 80.
Dr Kar, who served as the Director of the Directorate of Medical Education and Training under the Odisha Government, was widely recognized for his leadership and expertise in psychiatry. He also held the prestigious position of Principal and Head of the Psychiatry Department at Sriram Chandra Bhanj Medical College in Cuttack.
As per the recent media report by Ommcom News, born on January 18, 1946, Dr Kar completed his schooling at Ravenshaw Collegiate School in 1962. He obtained his medical degree from SCB Medical College and later graduated with a first rank in Psychiatry from Father Muller’s Medical College, Patna.
Dr. Kar’s remarkable career was marked by several significant achievements. Notably, he made history as the first Odia worked as the President of the Indian Medical Association. He was also the recipient of numerous prestigious awards for his contributions to social welfare and healthcare, including the Jaktor Harekrishna Malaral Bishub Award in 1998. In recognition of his exceptional service to medicine, he was honored with India’s highest medical award, the D.L.N. Murtirao Award.
Dr. Kar’s passing has left a deep void in the medical community, and many notable personalities from various fields have expressed their condolences.
