SR exam clash: Doctors question scheduling of GMC Srinagar, Jammu, Udhampur tests on same day

Resident Doctors
Srinagar: Junior doctors in Jammu and Kashmir have expressed concern and disappointment after the Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, GMC Jammu, and GMC Udhampur scheduled Senior Resident (SR) written examinations on the same day, leading to a direct clash for aspiring candidates.
The three government medical colleges have announced MCQ-based written examinations for SR posts on June 18, 2026.
GMC Jammu will hold the examination at 11:00 AM for departments including Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, and Pathology. GMC Udhampur has also scheduled its SR examination on the same day, with reporting time fixed at 11:30 AM for Ophthalmology and Orthopaedics posts.
Meanwhile, GMC Srinagar will conduct its SR recruitment examination on June 18 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM for departments including Community Medicine, Pathology, Medical Oncology, Microbiology, Orthopaedics, and Paediatrics.
Expressing concern over the overlapping exam schedules, health activist Dr Mohammad Momin Khan stated that doctors in Jammu & Kashmir already face limited employment opportunities and long waiting periods for recruitment.

"Conducting SR examinations for three government medical colleges on the same day unfairly forces candidates to choose between career opportunities. These vacancies come after months, and every deserving doctor should be given a fair chance to compete," he told Medical Dialogues.
Dr Khan urged the Jammu & Kashmir administration and the Health & Medical Education Department to review the schedule and consider rescheduling one or more examinations to avoid clashes.
He further questioned the planning behind the decision, asking, “What is happening to the healthcare system in J&K when qualified doctors are being forced to sacrifice opportunities due to administrative scheduling conflicts?”
Medical aspirants have also questioned why there was no coordination between the government medical colleges while preparing examination schedules. They have appealed for immediate intervention, stating that a minor change in examination dates could ensure equal opportunity for all eligible candidates.
