Supreme Court upholds regularisation of 97 Medical Officers in Nagaland

Supreme Court order
Dimapur: The Health and Family Welfare department said that the Supreme Court has cleared the regularisation of 97 medical officers who were appointed by the Nagaland government during the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the news reports, the department stated that while hearing a special leave petition (SLP) on January 16, the apex court ordered that “The present claim of the petitioners will have no bearing on the appointments already made by the state.” This means that the regularisation of the 97 medical officers will continue unaffected.
The SLP was filed following a judgment dated December 11, 2025, by the Kohima Bench of the Gauhati High Court in Writ Appeal No. 32 of 2025. The case had challenged the earlier single-judge orders dated August 1, 2025, in WP(C) No. 239/2024 and WP(C) No. 187/2024, which had permitted the Nagaland government to regularise medical officers engaged under the Special Recruitment Drive during the pandemic.
According to the Health and Family Welfare Department, the 97 medical officers, who were initially appointed during the COVID-19 crisis and are still serving, have now been formally regularised.
