TN Medical Council summons 2 doctors in 5-year-old's death case
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Medical Council (TNMC) has initiated an inquiry into the death of a five-year-old girl after the Directorate of Medical and Rural Health Services (DMRHS) sought action against two doctors, citing findings of gross medical negligence. The council has summoned both doctors and the complainants, with further proceedings scheduled for next month after one of the doctors failed to appear.
The case relates to the death of the five-year-old girl, who was admitted to a private hospital in Ambattur with fever on December 3 last year and died the following day. Following her death, the child's mother filed complaints with the Ambattur police and the Tamil Nadu Medical Council, alleging medical negligence. A police case was subsequently registered.
Meanwhile, the child's body was exhumed earlier this week in the presence of revenue and police officials for a second post-mortem examination as part of the ongoing investigation.

According to The New Indian Express, the Directorate of Medical and Rural Health Services wrote to the Tamil Nadu Medical Council in April, recommending action against the two treating doctors based on the findings of a departmental inquiry conducted in February. The report concluded that the child was in hypotensive shock leading to cardiac arrest and found deficiencies in patient care by the treating doctors and nursing staff.
It noted that the staff allegedly failed to recognise warning signs in time, and a paediatrician's opinion was not obtained despite the child's condition. “We conclude that the child’s death is due to gross medical negligence,” the report states.
The Tamil Nadu Medical Council stated that it will examine the DMRHS inquiry report along with other medical records before arriving at a final decision. The council has kept its order pending until the inquiry resumes next month.
