TN: Police Arrest 20-year-old for Assaulting a Woman Doctor

Madurai: A 20-year-old man was arrested by the Sivaganga police on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting a woman doctor who was undergoing a compulsory rotatory medical internship (CRMI) at Sivagangai Medical College Hospital. The incident, which occurred on Monday night, has sparked widespread protests among intern doctors.
Medical Dialogues has previously reported that in a shocking incident, a female Compulsory Rotating Medical Intern (CRMI) from Government Sivaganga Medical College Hospital (SMCH) was allegedly ambushed by an unidentified man while returning to her hostel after completing her night duty at the hospital.
According to her colleagues, the attacker, believed to be an outsider, attempted to gag her with a piece of cloth. However, she was rescued when a relative of a hospital staff member, who witnessed the incident, tried to confront the accused on his bike, but the accused fled the scene.

The demands included the installation of CCTV cameras in all hospital areas, the deployment of sufficient security personnel, and the establishment of well-maintained resting rooms for doctors. Additionally, the protestors called for stronger legal punishments for individuals involved in violent or sexual crimes against healthcare workers.

As per the recent media reports by TOI, the woman doctor was returning to her hostel on Monday night when an unknown miscreant allegedly covered her face with a cloth and pushed her. He reportedly slapped her before fleeing the scene as the woman shouted in alarm.
The Sivagangai Town police quickly registered a case following the protest staged by CRMI interns on Tuesday, which included sections of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. They also reviewed the hospital's CCTV footage as part of their investigation.
