TN Surgeon Dr Jayalal takes charge as the new national president of IMA
Delhi: Surgeon Dr Jayalal took charge as the new national president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) for the year 2000-2021 at its 95th annual National conference which was held recently. While taking charge, the doctor announced his aim to fight against mixopathy, pointing that the association would continue opposing the move of the government to promote " khichadi medicine" in the country.
Dr Jayalal is an associate professor of surgery at Tirunelveli Medical College. The annual conference of the Indian Medical Association and installation of Dr. J. A. Jayalal as the new national president of IMA for the year 2020-2021 took place on 28/12/20 at ITC Chola.
He is a government medical practitioner from the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu with a great reputation. He has also served as state honorary general secretary for IMA Tamilnadu State and further as the National Coordinator for the academic wings of IMA. Dr. Jayalal rose from a humble background as the son of a staff nurse to become a well-known laparoscopic surgeon in the southern part of India. He has mostly used his expertise for the benefit of the poor by working in government hospitals currently a professor of surgery at Kanyakumari medical college. He is a multi-faceted person with an MBA from Canada and a PhD from the University of Pondicherry. He's also a Rotarian. He chairs the UNESCO Bioethics in India.
The minister for Health and Family Welfare for Tamil Nadu Dr. C. Vijayabaskar was the chief guest along with the state principal health secretary Dr. J. Radha Krishnan at the event. The health minister in his chief guest address pointed out that the IMA has always stood by the state government in all health-related activities at all times of disasters both natural and man-made. He specifically mentioned the cooperation between IMA and the government during the Corona crisis and thanked the members of IMA for assisting the government selflessly. The health secretary assured categorically that the government of Tamil Nadu stood for purity of sciences in stream of medicine and more so wouldn't accept mixing of other streams with modern medicine.
Taking charge as the new president, Dr. J. A. Jayalal clearly said that every effort would be taken to negotiate with the central government not to encourage the mixing of various streams of medicine which would ultimately only be detrimental to the state unsuspecting illiterate public who would be denied the best of modern medicine. He warned that he and the national IMA would not tolerate Mixopathy promoted by the central government and Central council of Indian medicine and declared that he will not rest until the battle is won.
He also praised the chief minister and health minister of the government of Tamil Nadu for the allocation of 7.5% of seats for the poor meritorious students from government schools. He also proposed to form a pool of willing doctors who are willing to serve in rural pockets of the country where basic health care was not available and requested the states to identify such areas and IMA would immediately rush expertise there.
