UP IMA President, 3 doctors booked for alleged negligence after patient's death

Lucknow: The President of the Uttar Pradesh chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and three other doctors have been booked in an alleged case of medical negligence following the death of a woman after childbirth at a private nursing home in Shahjahanpur district owned by the IMA president. The family of the deceased created an uproar for several hours at the hospital until the police registered an FIR.

The deceased had been under the care of one of the doctors booked in this case for the last nine months. According to her family, she gave birth to a healthy baby girl through cesarean section in the early hours of Sunday. However, her condition reportedly began to worsen soon after delivery, and she unfortunately died.

Blaming the doctors for gross negligence, the family members alleged that the four doctors failed to provide proper treatment to their daughter, due to which she could not survive.

As per a Live Hindustan news report, the incident took place when the father of the woman admitted his daughter to a private nursing home in the city. Around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, she went into labour and gave birth to his baby girl through C-section. When her condition deteriorated afterwards, the family contacted the doctor, who stated that there was a shortage of blood and asked them to arrange for it.

Following this, the woman’s father began arranging for blood, but the family alleged that during this time, her condition worsened, and therefore, she was shifted to the ICU and placed on a ventilator. When her condition showed no improvement despite this, the doctors transported her to a private nursing home owned by the IMA president, where she reportedly died.

"After delivery, she was shifted to a private ward despite her unstable condition. Dr ***, however, showed no serious concern and failed to take appropriate action. When her condition worsened, she was eventually moved to the intensive care unit (ICU) and placed on a ventilator by other doctors, including the IMA president. Later, when she passed away, Dr *** got her transported in an ambulance to a hospital owned by the IMA president," stated the family members.

When her family was informed of her death, they created an uproar at the hospital. A crowd gathered outside, and police had to be called in to control the situation. Later, the deceased father filed a complaint.

Based on the complaint, the police registered an FIR under Section 106 (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against the four doctors.

Speaking to the Indian Express, Shahjahanpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajesh Dwivedi said a panel of doctors was conducting a post-mortem on the woman’s body, and further action will be taken based on the autopsy report.

The IMA president, however, denied all allegations and claimed he was falsely implicated. He stated that it was the deceased’s family who brought her to his hospital and that she had already died by the time she arrived. He also mentioned that he only visited the other hospital after receiving a call from there.
