US-based doctor loses Rs 1 crore worth of gold at Bengaluru wedding

Bengaluru: While attending a family function, a 52-year-old US-based doctor alleged that 725 grams of gold ornaments worth around Rs 1 crore were stolen from a wedding hall under the Avalahalli police station limits.

As per a latest TNIE media report, the doctor had come to Bengaluru on April 18 to attend her nephew’s wedding. She was staying at her brother’s house in Ganganagar on Ballari Road and had brought the gold jewellery with her for the occasion.

The incident took place on Wednesday when she went to the SDP Palace on Old Madras Road in Bidarahalli, where the wedding ceremony was being held. In the evening, around 6.30 pm, her brother handed over a box containing the gold ornaments at the venue.

The ornaments were reportedly kept in a room inside the wedding hall. After wearing a few ornaments for the reception, she stated that she left the remaining jewellery in the room and went to attend the reception after locking the door.

When she returned to her room, unlocked the door and went inside, she did not find the ornaments. The doctor told police that when she was getting ready, a domestic worker of the wedding hall had come to the room.

Following the theft, she filed a complaint with the police on Thursday afternoon. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case, and an investigation is underway.

A police officer told TNIE, "The doctor has stated that she lost about 725gm of gold ornaments worth around Rs 1 crore. Since the room key was with her, we are not ruling out the possibility of somebody known to the complainant or her family members. We are checking CCTV footage to find out if anybody entered the room using a spare key. Those who had access to the room and her family members are being questioned."

Meanwhile, the wedding hall manager refused the allegation of staff being involved. He said, "No staffers are involved in the theft. The complainant has said the gold ornaments were stolen when the room door was locked, and the key was with her. We are cooperating with the police investigation."
