Violence in GMC Agartala Hospital! Duty doctor Assaulted, Abused by Attendants, 1 Arrested
Agartala: In another incident of violence against doctors, a doctor at GMC Agartala's GB Pant Hospital in Tripura was allegedly assaulted and verbally abused by a group of youths, who were the attendants of a patient. The doctor suffered injuries to his head and photographs of the doctor's head, drenched in blood from a severe cut were circulating on social media platforms.
While the doctor suffered injuries in the attack, he is now out of danger, informed the National Chairman of the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA), Dr. Rohan Krishnan.
He informed, "The incident took place at GMC Agartala, where the resident doctor on duty in the Radiology Department was attacked. The concerned doctor hails from Karnataka. 4-5 attendants of the patient, who was admitted in the Gynecology ward, attacked the doctor."
"We have demanded that the doctor should get Rs 5 lakh compensation. We also reached out to the CM's office, some of our representatives were there. The CM also went to visit the resident doctor. Although the doctor is now out of danger, we demand that if the government fails to prevent such attacks then at least the prescribed compensation should be given to the doctors," he added.
ANI has reported that the attack occurred while the doctor was on duty. According to police, the verbal spat started over a misunderstanding of the treatment process of a patient. The police launched an investigation into the alleged incident of assault and detained several individuals involved in the incident.
A case was also registered with GBP outpost as number 42/24 today and one accused was arrested in connection with the case. According to eyewitnesses, a group of men entered the hospital's emergency ward and heated words were exchanged. The situation escalated and the youths attacked the doctor, leaving him covered in blood.
Hospital staff and security personnel intervened to restrain the attackers and save the life of the doctor. The doctor is in stable condition after receiving treatment.
Meanwhile, Dr. Kanak Chaudhury, Deputy Medical Superintendent of GBP Hospital told ANI, "I strongly condemn this assault and will go for a protest if the culprits are not arrested."
He also urged the government to take stern action against those who dare to assault doctors during duty hours. Further investigation is underway.
Protesting against the incident, Dr. Rohan Krishnan wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "Saddened to hear about yet another incident of Violence on Healthcare workers. It is high time that state governments & @MoHFW_INDIA @ministryofhome1 frame guidelines and stringent laws to counteract this problem. @NMC_IND should also recommend this to govt. My sympathies with the doctors i have found out that he is out of danger. @FAIMA_INDIA_ demands a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to be given to the affected doctors by the state government."
