18 out of 22 AIIMS fully functional: MoS Health informs Parliament

New Delhi: Out of the 22 All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) approved across the country, 18 are currently functional, while 4 are at different stages of construction, according to the information shared by Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, in the parliament.

The four AIIMS that are currently not functional are AIIMS Darbhanga in Bihar, where pre-investment work is underway; AIIMS Majra (Rewari) in Haryana; AIIMS Awantipora in Jammu and Kashmir; and AIIMS Madurai in Tamil Nadu. Of these, three institutes are still under construction.

The Minister shared the information while responding to a series of questions asked by MP Anto Antony who sought to know the total number of All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) that are currently functioning in the country, the number and States of AIIMS whose construction is ongoing along with the number of such centres proposed to be established in the country and the expected timeline for completion and operationalisation of the AllMS projects that are presently under construction and those that have been proposed.

In response, Jadhav said, "Under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), till date establishment of 22 All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has been approved in various States/UTs in the country. Out of the 22, 18 AIIMS are currently functional and 4 AIIMS are in different stages of construction. The completion and operationalisation of the AIIMS depends upon various factors, including project management, regulatory clearances, recruitment of faculty/non-faculty etc."
