22-Year-Old Dies After Anaesthesia in Kochi; Family Files Medical Negligence Complaint

Kochi: Allegations of medical negligence have surfaced after a 22-year-old man died following the administration of anaesthesia at a private hospital in Ernakulam, leading to an FIR being lodged against the hospital authorities.

According to the news reports, the deceased, a native of Tripunithura, had been admitted to the hospital for a scheduled surgery on March 10 to treat a minor ligament tear in his leg. The injury reportedly occurred on February 12 when the scooter he was riding overturned after a dog suddenly ran across the road.

The family said that the deceased was taken on a wheelchair for surgery around 7 pm. After an hour, the hospital authorities informed his parents that he suffered a cardiac arrest after being administered anaesthesia, reports TOI.

Despite medical efforts, his death was confirmed around 10 pm, the family said.

A postmortem examination was conducted at Government Medical College (GMC), Kalamassery, following the incident. His funeral was later held at the Tripunithura public crematorium on Thursday.

The family has filed a complaint with the Ernakulam Town South police station, alleging possible negligence on the part of the hospital authorities. Based on the complaint, police registered a case of unnatural death and have begun an investigation.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that holding a Kerala-based private hospital and its doctors responsible for the death of a 21-year-old endosulfan victim, who underwent testicle surgery at the hospital, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (DCDRC) directed them to pay Rs 13.30 lakh as compensation to the parents of the patient, along with 6 percent per annum interest from the date of complaint till realisation. Apart from this, the consumer court has also directed them to pay Rs 25,000 to the patient's family as the cost of litigation to the complainant within 30 days of the receipt of the Commission's order.
