48-year-old patient found hanging in Kolkata hospital
Kolkata: In an alleged case of suicide, a 48-year-old man admitted to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) Kolkata following a major spine operation was found dead inside the hospital early on March 10, 2023.
The patient, Manoranjan Biswas, who was a resident of Uttarpara in Hooghly district, was found hanging from the ceiling on the third floor of the hospital's Green Building around 7.25 am on Friday. He was declared dead by the hospital authorities.
Biswas was taken to the hospital on February 8 due to problems in his lower waist. He had undergone spinal cord surgery on February 24.
Speaking to Telegraph India, an officer of the Bowbazar police station said, "He underwent spine surgery and was recuperating. However, he had been extremely depressed as he was unemployed for the last year because of his ailment."
He was a daily wage worker confined to his bed due to his illness. His illness prevented him from doing his work, the family members told the police. He is reported to have been mentally affected because of his health, according to the police.
An officer said, "We have not received any complaint from the family. The body has been sent for post-mortem. Preliminary inquiry does not suggest any foul play."
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported about a hunger strike at Calcutta Medical College in Kolkata by five UG medical students in support of the junior doctor's protest against the state health department's decision to postpone students' union elections. The services were affected and the faculty members, including the principal of the institute were confined inside their chambers for around 30 hours.
