85-year-old man undergoes Complex Bilateral Knee Replacement Surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital
New Delhi: In an era where arthritis has become increasingly prevalent, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital has achieved a remarkable milestone by successfully performing simultaneous bilateral total knee replacement surgery on an 85-year-old patient suffering from severe degenerative arthritis.
This condition had significantly impaired the patient's mobility and quality of life over the past decade.
The 85-year-old was refused surgery of both knees by renowned hospitals, and then he reached out to Dr Anant Kumar Tiwari, Professor and Head, Joint Replacement Centre, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi.

Led by Dr Anant Kumar Tiwari, at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, the medical team undertook the complex surgery using minimally invasive techniques, ensuring minimal blood loss and rapid post-operative recovery. Despite the patient's age and previous medical history, which included cardiac bypass and spine surgeries, Dr Tiwari and his team successfully performed the procedure to alleviate pain and restore mobility.
"Given the patient's age and the severity of arthritis, this surgery was both challenging and critical for improving his quality of life," stated Dr Anant Kumar Tiwari. "We recommended simultaneous surgery on both knees to expedite recovery and minimize overall healing time, taking into account his existing medical conditions." He added.
Following the surgery on 25th June, the patient demonstrated remarkable progress, standing and walking with ease on the very next day. After a week-long hospital stay under careful post-operative care, he was discharged with renewed mobility and freedom from pain.
"The joy and relief expressed by the patient and his family upon seeing him walk pain-free were truly heartwarming," added Dr Tiwari. "It reaffirms our commitment to providing comprehensive care and leveraging medical advancements for the benefit of every patient, regardless of age."
The successful outcome of this surgery underscores the importance of proactive medical intervention and personalized care for elderly patients suffering from debilitating conditions like arthritis. Sir Ganga Ram Hospital continues to pioneer advancements in joint replacement surgeries, ensuring that patients receive world-class treatment and regain their independence.
