AIIMS expansion under PMSSY boosts Tertiary care, says Health Minister

All India Institute of Medical Sciences
New Delhi: Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, outlined the significant strides achieved under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) through the establishment and operation of 22 All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) across the country.
These AIIMS institutions have served as centres of excellence in healthcare delivery, offering a full spectrum of medical services. These include preventive, promotive, curative, and rehabilitative care, alongside advanced diagnostic services, trauma care, emergency, and critical care. Their multi-disciplinary approach ensures holistic patient treatment while also reducing the burden on existing tertiary hospitals.
The expansion of AIIMS into far-flung regions has revolutionized patient care by bringing world-class treatment closer to home for millions. AIIMS facilities now provide specialised surgeries, organ transplant services, neonatal intensive care, and chronic disease management — all under one roof.
These institutes have also contributed to raising health awareness, early disease detection, and community-level outreach, helping to bridge the urban-rural health divide.

To date, the establishment of 22 AIIMS has been approved in various States/UTs in the country, and the details are at Annexure-I. AIIMS provides preventive, promotive, curative, and rehabilitative health care services, including advanced diagnostics, specialized surgeries, trauma, emergency, and critical care services. AIIMS is producing highly trained medical professionals through its undergraduate, postgraduate, super-speciality courses, and fellowships. The Institutes are also running courses for Nursing and Allied Healthcare professionals. The details of the OPD/IPD services provided to patients and the annual intake of students in various AIIMS are enclosed at Annexure-II.
