Another pregnant woman dies at Kota Hospital following post-surgery complications
Kota- Amidst rising concerns over the number of deaths among women in Kota's government hospitals over the past fortnight, another pregnant woman died on Sunday at the Government New Medical College Hospital (NMCH).
Experts noted that most of the deceased women exhibited symptoms such as kidney failure and urinary blockage, conditions that point to likely hospital-acquired infections.
According to reports, the deceased, identified as 20-year-old Shireen, was five months pregnant and had been admitted to NMCH on May 6 for a minor uterine procedure. However, her condition deteriorated the very next day; her family reported that she was exhibiting symptoms of urinary obstruction and a kidney infection.
This was her first pregnancy, and in an attempt to save her life, the family spent ₹4 lakh on medications at a private hospital. Family members alleged that doctors at NMCH pressured them to transfer Shireen to a private hospital when her condition deteriorated.
On Saturday, she was shifted back to NMCH, where she passed away around 3:30 PM on Sunday. Following her death, the family alleged that it was the hospital staff themselves who had initially forced them to be shifted.
In response, Dr RP Meena, Additional Principal of NMCH, confirmed that she was brought back from a private hospital on Saturday. She was admitted here in critical condition and placed on a ventilator; however, she passed away on Sunday afternoon, according to TOI.
Meena stated that she had undergone a minor uterine surgery at NMCH, and "at her family's request," she was referred to another facility of their choice. Her body was handed over to the police.
Hospital sources stated that the pattern of kidney failure and urinary blockage observed in these cases suggests that these deaths are more likely linked to infections contracted during the admission process than to the C-sections themselves.
The recent death follows four similar deaths reported in government hospitals in Kota since May 5; subsequently, the condition of six women who underwent C-section deliveries in the Gynaecology Ward at NMCH suddenly deteriorated.
