AP hospital sealed after patient dies during illegal kidney removal

Tirupati: In a shocking incident, a 29-year-old woman passed away during an illegal kidney removal at a hospital in Madanapalle, Annamayya district, Andhra Pradesh, exposing a suspected organ trade network across the state. Authorities have sealed the hospital and taken twelve people, including two doctors, into custody in connection with the case.

According to the news reports, the victim, a resident of Buddapalem village in Anandapuram mandal, Visakhapatnam, was allegedly lured into selling her kidney for Rs 8 lakh. The illegal transplant was performed at Global Multi-Speciality Hospital, Madanapalle, which reportedly lacked permission to conduct organ transplants. Police officials revealed that the hospital, run by two doctors, allegedly carried out multiple unauthorized procedures using guest doctors.

Her live-in partner, who reportedly introduced her to the brokers, demanded the body but was initially refused, leading to an altercation in Tirupati. Suspecting foul play, he alerted the woman’s mother, and together they reported the matter to the police. The Tirupati East CI Srinivasulu detained the live-in partner and the brokers to secure the body.

The case was transferred to the Madanapalle II Town police, where CI Raja Reddy took the brokers, along with her live-in partner, into custody for questioning, reports TOI.

Authorities also detained two dialysis technicians, one from Madanapalle and another from Kadiri, and two government hospital staff members were also taken into custody. Additionally, a doctor, the district coordinator of hospital services in Chittoor, and father of one of the hospital directors, was taken into custody to verify whether his official position was exploited to support the illegal organ trade.

Speaking to the Hindu, the Deputy SP said the body was brought back to the Government Hospital in Madanapalle from Tirupati on Wednesday. “We are waiting for the post-mortem examination report,” he said. Criminal cases under sections of the BNS and the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act have been registered against the accused.

Andhra Pradesh has witnessed multiple incidents related to the illegal kidney trade in recent years. Cases in Guntur and Visakhapatnam have exposed networks using forged documents and coercion to facilitate unauthorised organ transplants.
