Army Hospital introduces advanced radiotherapy technology for cancer treatment

New Delhi: Army Hospital (Research & Referral), New Delhi, has commissioned a Ring Gantry-based Linear Accelerator in its Department of Radiation Oncology to boost advanced cancer treatment services.
The new radiation oncology technology was formally inaugurated in the presence of Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh on May 25, 2026.
The advanced technology would strengthen cancer care services at Army Hospital (R&R) and improve access to advanced radiotherapy for serving personnel, veterans and their dependents. It is expected to enhance in-house treatment capacity for the significant patient load at the hospital.

According to the press release, this Linear Accelerator is capable of delivering modern radiotherapy techniques including Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy, Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy, Image-Guided Radiation Therapy, Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy and Stereotactic Radiosurgery.
It enables precise delivery of radiation to tumour sites while minimising exposure to surrounding normal tissues, thereby supporting improved treatment outcomes and patient care.

The procurement of the Linear Accelerator within the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) is a substantial upgrade from the previous equipment which has, since, been decommissioned. The induction marks a step towards modernisation of oncology services within AFMS. Other oncology centres under AFMS are also being upgraded in a phased manner.
DG AFMS Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin; Commandant, Army Hospital (R&R) Lieutenant General Avinash Das and other senior officials were present on the occasion.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stones of Ophthalmology, Oncology and Joint Replacement Centres at Army Hospital (Research & Referral) and new infrastructure at Base Hospital, Delhi Cantt, as part of the 262nd Army Medical Corps Raising Day celebrations.
The state-of-the-art facilities at Army Hospital (Research & Referral) are envisaged to significantly enhance the tertiary care capabilities of the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS), particularly in the domains of advanced eye care, cancer treatment, and complex joint replacement surgeries, while the new hospital infrastructure at Base Hospital is being developed with a capacity of 998 beds along with an additional 100 crisis expansion beds, to address routine and emergency healthcare requirements of the Defence Forces personnel.
