BHU launches new OTs, 31-bedded ICU at cardiothoracic and vascular surgery department
Varanasi: To provide advanced and improved healthcare services with state-of-the-art facility, Sir Sundar Lal Hospital of Institute of Medical Sciences- Banaras Hindu University (IMS-BHU) has launched a new operation theatre and a 31-bedded intensive care unit (ICU) at the centenary super speciality block (CSSB) building on Monday.
The two new facilities were inaugurated at the hospital's Department of Cardiothoracic and vascular surgery by Padmashree Dr TK Lahiri and the rector of BHU Prof VK Shukla.
Sir Sunderlal Hospital (SSH-BHU) is a teaching hospital affiliated with the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (IMS-BHU) in Varanasi, India. Located on the BHU campus, it is the largest tertiary referral hospital in Eastern Uttar Pradesh state.

The Institute Of Medical Sciences (IMS-BHU) is one of the Six institutes of Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India and comprises three faculties, Faculty of Medicine, Dental Sciences, and Ayurveda. The Institute of Medical Sciences is the medical school of the university. Like other institutions forming BHU, it is residential and co-educational.
Since the department has now three OTs and a new ICU ward, the institute will experience fewer patient queues and shorter waiting lists for surgeries. This will improve the quality of medical services for the patients.
Prof Sanjay Kumar, head of the department of cardiothoracic surgery informed HT, “With the help of SSL hospital administration three operation theatres and 31-bedded ICU equipped with modern equipment have been prepared. The new facility will be a boon for the patients. The department of cardiothoracic surgery was established on the premises of SSL Hospital in the early 1970s and continued to operate till June 2023 with limited facilities of 1 operation theatre and 6 ICU beds."
The Institute started functioning as the College of Medical Sciences in 1960 with nine departments of Modern Medicine and eight departments of Ayurveda, under the leadership of K. N. Udupa, the Founder and Director of the institute.[4][5]
In 1971, the College of Medical Sciences was upgraded to the Institute of Medical Sciences. Today it has 33 departments of Modern Medicine including 10 Departments of Super-specialties, four Departments of dentistry, eleven Departments of Ayurveda and a school of Nursing.
“Shifting the OT and ICU to centenary super speciality block (CSSB) is a historical landmark as the CSSB building has been built keeping in view the super-speciality treatments," said Prof Kumar.
