Bihar Govt transfers 150 acres of land to Union Health Ministry for Darbhanga AIIMS
Patna: In a significant move towards improving the healthcare facilities in Bihar, the Union Health Ministry approved the construction of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bihar. This approval is followed by the Bihar government's proposal three years back to establish the second AIIMS in the state.
The state government has officially transferred 150.13 acres of land to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW) for the construction of AIIMS at Ekmi Shobhan Bypass in Darbhanga district. This decision marks a crucial step towards addressing the healthcare needs of the region and providing high-quality medical services to its people.
Additional chief secretary of Bihar Prataya Amrit said, “The remaining 37.31 acres for the project will be transferred next week”.

The AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) in Darbhanga will be the second AIIMS in the state of Bihar, the first one is in Patna. These institutions are part of a broader initiative to improve healthcare infrastructure and medical education across India. The AIIMS in Darbhanga is expected to enhance healthcare access and provide high-quality medical education and research opportunities in the region.
Dr Madhabananda Kar, executive director of AIIMS Darbhanga has mentioned that ideally, they wanted more than 200 acres of land for their project which would help in creating a fully functional medical institute with ample space for hospitals, research centres, residential areas, and other essential infrastructure in one go.
According to the Hindustan Times, Bihar’s Health Minister Mangal Pandey said, “Construction of AIIMS at Darbhanga will begin soon.” He also added, “A month back I had met Union health minister JP Nadda to expedite the AIIMS Darbhanga project. Subsequently, we got a letter from the Centre requesting us to hand over the land so that work can be initiated soon.”
The development of this AIIMS will be a cornerstone in the state’s efforts to improve medical facilities and reduce the healthcare disparity faced by its residents, particularly those in remote and underserved areas.
