Centre confirms No Proposal for AIIMS in Ujjain

Centre confirms No Proposal for AIIMS in Ujjain

New Delhi: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has clarified that there is currently no proposal to establish an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) or any centrally funded medical college in Ujjain district, Madhya Pradesh, under the ongoing phase of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). However, the state continues to benefit from several central health schemes aimed at improving healthcare access.

Responding to a question raised by Shri Anil Firojiya in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, stated that 22 AIIMS have been approved across India so far, including AIIMS Bhopal, which is operational in Madhya Pradesh. At present, Ujjain is not under consideration for a new AIIMS.

Meanwhile, the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) has expanded its reach in the district with 26 Jan Aushadhi Kendras currently operational. These outlets provide affordable generic medicines, covering almost all drugs listed in the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM), except for lab reagents and vaccines.

During the recent Lok Sabha session, Shri Anil Firojiya asked whether the Government proposes to establish All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) or a Centrally funded medical college in Ujjain district in the State of Madhya Pradesh.

He also asked if not, whether the Government has any proposal to establish such institute in the future, if so, the details thereof;

He sought to know the number of Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendras opened in the Ujjain district so far.

Furthermore, he asked whether all essential medicines are available on a regular basis in said centres.

He inquired whether adequate doctors, nursing staff, and state-of-the-art medical equipment are available in the Primary Health Centres (PHC) and Community Health Centres (CHC) of Ujjain district, if so, the details thereof; and

Additionally, he asked the number of beneficiaries receiving the benefits of health insurance under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana in Ujjain district so far, and the number of hospitals listed under the scheme.

In response to these questions, the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, clarified that under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), to date establishment of 22 All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS) has been approved in various States/UTs in the country, including one AIIMS at Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, which is functional. In the current phase of PMSSY, there is no proposal for the establishment of a new AIIMS in Ujjain.

Under Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), as on January 26, 26 Jan Aushadhi Kendras have been opened in the Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh. Almost all of the generic medicines included in the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM) are included in the basket of PMBJP medicines, except lab reagents and vaccines.

Public Health and Hospitals are a State Subject, and the responsibility of provisioning of healthcare professionals lies with the respective State/UT Governments. However, under the National Health Mission (NHM), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, provides financial and technical support to the States/UTs to strengthen their healthcare systems based on the Programme Implementation Plans (PIPs) submitted by the States/UTs within their overall resource envelope, added the Minister.

As of 30.06.2025, in the Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh, 11.54 lakhs Ayushman Cards have been created, and 19 hospitals have been empanelled under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY).
