Chandigarh: Govt mulling 500 bedded Mother and Child Hospital on GMCH vacant land
Chandigarh: After Government Medical College and Hospital Sector 32 failed to utilize the allotted 10-acre land to construct a regional trauma centre for the past 15 years, the UT administration is mulling over setting up a new 500-bedded mother and child hospital instead.
Without wasting any more time, the UT administration discussed establishing the facility after GMCH authorities failed to construct a trauma centre on the allotted land. The discussion was taken in a review meeting recently held by UT health secretary Yashpal Garg to discuss the pending projects related to health or medical education and the Ayush department.
Due to a regional trauma centre shortage in the area, the government allotted the land to GMCH in this regard. However, no such trauma centre has been built in the past 15 years. Considering the patient load on the existing mother and child facilities in the city, a part of the land has been planned to be used to construct an exclusive mother and child care hospital with a capacity of around 500 beds instead.

In response, The Director Principal, GMCH-32, Jasbinder Kaur, told The Tribune, "A detailed project report was prepared in consultation with Dr (Prof) MC Misra, former Director AIIMS, as an external expert. It was sent to the Centre by the then Adviser to the Administration, Chandigarh, for approval. Based on a verbal discussion with the predecessor Director, it had been put on hold until further orders, and there had been no progress since then."
Requesting a month to think over the possible use of the land, Jasbinder Kaur said that the land was allotted for the medical college and hospital and should be utilised for that purpose. Therefore, Jasbinder Kaur is against the decision of the UT administration since, as per her claims, they approached the government with a plan, but in return, no progress was made.
However, The UT chief architect suggested that allotted land should be utilised for the best possible use by the health department.
