Chaos at KGMU after Server Failure hits OPD operations
Lucknow: A server outage at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) on Wednesday morning caused a major disruption to outpatient department (OPD) services, impacting thousands of patients dependent on the facility for medical care. The outage caused widespread chaos in both the New and Old OPD blocks and also halted registration services at Lari Cardiology and Queen Mary's Hospital.
KGMU usually registers between 7,000 and 8,000 patients daily, with registration starting at 8 am and OPD services commencing at 9 am. However, on Wednesday, patients were left waiting in the cold as registration was delayed, leading to frustration among those who had arrived early. By 10 am, when there was still no sign of registration resuming, the KGMU administration initiated offline registration to manage the situation, offering relief to the waiting patients.

Although the registration issue was resolved, chaos continued in the report collection and fee submission queues. Following instructions from officials, the offline fee collection process was launched, but it also faced delays. Patients were advised to wait for their reports, and the situation began to calm down once attendants and staff received reassurance from the authorities.
Speaking to TOI, KGMU spokesperson Prof Sudhir Singh said, "Server issue arose due to a fire incident involving NIC server in Delhi. By afternoon, the problems were resolved and all online services were restored by midday."
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that in the digital age, where hospitals and medical institutions increasingly rely on technology for efficient patient care, an unexpected server outage can have widespread consequences. AIIMS Delhi, one of the premier healthcare institutions in the country, experienced this firsthand when its server went down from Wednesday afternoon to Thursday noon.
