Lucknow: In a major push to healthcare infrastructure, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday emphasised the need to make the state's health services future-ready to keep pace with global advancements and effectively respond to emerging challenges.

He was speaking at the foundation stone laying and inauguration ceremony of various health projects worth Rs 1,000 crore at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) here.

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, who also holds the Health portfolio, and Medical Education Minister Mayankeshwar Sharan Singh were present on the occasion.

The chief minister said institutions like KGMU and SGPGI (Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences) have earned the trust of patients not only from across Uttar Pradesh but also from neighbouring states and even Nepal, according to the PTI news agency.

“An institution or an individual’s success depends on how well they adapt to the pace of time. Those who prepare in advance move forward, those who don’t are left behind,” he said.

He noted that people place their faith in these institutions due to the high quality of care provided. “Even patients express belief in their own recovery. That reflects how positive thinking impacts health outcomes,” he said, citing recent conversations with patients.

Highlighting the role of technology in modern healthcare, the chief minister announced efforts to link KGMU and SGPGI with the Centre of Excellence in Medical Technology at IIT Kanpur.

“We are working on collaboration between IIT Kanpur’s Centre of Excellence and institutions like KGMU and SGPGI to prepare for global health challenges,” he said.

He underlined the rapid expansion of medical education across the state. “In 1947, UP had very few government medical colleges. Last year alone, admissions were made in 17 new colleges – 13 government-run, three under the PPP model, and one private,” he said.

The state is moving towards having one medical college in each of its 75 districts, he added.

Adityanath said that district-level medical colleges will soon undertake primary screenings, so that only patients genuinely in need of specialist care are referred to tertiary centres like KGMU.

Reflecting on India’s healthcare journey, the chief minister said the country has moved from being the 11th largest economy to the fourth. “Earlier, there was only one AIIMS. Now, several AIIMS institutions have been established, promoting both healthcare and research,” he said.

He described AIIMS as a symbol of excellence and said KGMU is similarly building a legacy by embracing innovation.

Praising the double-engine government model (BJP at the Centre and in the state), he said this has accelerated the development of health infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh. He urged doctors and institutions to treat health expansion not just as a service but as a mission.

During the event, Adityanath inaugurated a Rs 105-crore state-of-the-art cardiology wing at KGMU with 92 ICCU beds and modern facilities. KGMU Vice-Chancellor Prof Sonia Nityanand said the wing will significantly reduce patient load at SGPGI, Lohia Institute and Lari Cardiology, which previously had only 84 beds, reports PTI.

He also inaugurated Uttar Pradesh’s first orthopaedic super-speciality centre at KGMU. Built at a cost of Rs 86 crore, the 340-bed facility includes 220 orthopaedic surgery beds, 60 for sports medicine, 60 for paediatric orthopaedics, and 24 high-dependency beds. It features eight large operation theatres, two minor OTs, and eight OPD rooms.

He also laid the foundation stone for a Rs 378-crore general surgery building equipped with robotic surgery facilities. The seven-storey building is expected to be completed in two years and will include 12 modular OTs, a 12-bed ICU, robotic units, solar power systems, and a medical gas pipeline network.

Additionally, a Rs 48-crore administrative building for KGMU was announced. The five-storey facility will feature diagnostic labs, accommodation for patients and attendants, a 450-bed block, and parking for 100 vehicles.
