Darbhanga AIIMS Gets Environmental Clearance, set for completion by 2029

AIIMS Darbhanga
Darbhanga: With the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Darbhanga having received mandatory environmental clearance, the long-awaited project has taken a major step closer to reality. Implemented by the Hospital Services Consultancy Corporation (HSCC), the institute will be developed as a modern medical township and is expected to transform public healthcare and medical education in Bihar.
Spread over nearly 7.36 lakh square metres, the Darbhanga AIIMS project is estimated to cost around Rs 807 crore. Officials said the institute is likely to be completed by 2029 and is expected to give a major boost to public healthcare services in the state, particularly in north Bihar.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lay the foundation stone of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Darbhanga on November 13. Speaking at a gathering during a Samman Samaroh in Patna, Choudhary mentioned that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is also expected to attend the event.

According to the news reports, since the construction area exceeds 2.08 lakh square metres, the project falls under Category ‘B’ of the Environmental Impact Assessment rules and therefore requires mandatory environmental clearance. The tallest structures on the campus will rise up to 30 metres. Authorities said the clearance ensures that key aspects such as waste management, water conservation, and environmental sustainability have been carefully planned before construction begins.
In the first phase, about 4.81 lakh square metres of land will be developed, while the remaining area has been kept aside for future expansion. The campus design places strong emphasis on sustainability. Around 1.03 lakh square metres will be developed as a green area, and 9,207 trees will be planted. Twelve small ponds will be built for rainwater harvesting, and sewage treatment plants will be installed to recycle water for cooling systems and irrigation. The total daily water requirement of the campus is estimated at 2,070 kilolitres, with a large portion to be met through treated water, reports the Patna Press.
The main hospital complex will consist of four blocks with ground plus five floors, offering a total capacity of 720 beds. The facility will include an outpatient department, oncology services, radio diagnostics, an AYUSH block, a mortuary, and a hospital service centre. A 750-seat auditorium is also planned.
The academic infrastructure will include a medical college with an annual intake of 150 students and a nursing college for 100 students, enabling integrated medical education and training on the same campus.
In addition, large-scale residential and hostel facilities are planned. Residential buildings for doctors and staff will range from five to eight floors, while hostels will accommodate undergraduate, postgraduate, and nursing students. Other amenities planned on the campus include a large mess hall, shopping complex, guest house, night shelter, and a medical waste management centre.
