Doctor assaulted, Hospital vandalised after 86-year-old patient's death
Pune: A doctor, medical staff, and security personnel at Bharati Hospital in Dhankawadi were recently subjected to violence and physical assault by the relatives of an 86-year-old patient who passed away at home after being voluntarily discharged from the hospital by his family. Six individuals have been booked for alleged assault and vandalising hospital property.
Dr Ankita, the complainant, stated that the patient's relatives blamed her and the hospital staff for the patient's death. They accused them of medical negligence and subjected them to verbal abuse and physical assault on the hospital premises.

As per the Pune Mirror news report, the incident took place on January 7 at approximately 12:30 a.m. in the outpatient department. On December 29, the patient was admitted to Bharati Hospital with complications of low pulse rate and blockages.
Although the doctor informed the family members about the patient's critical condition, the relatives decided to transfer him to another hospital. Therefore, they discharged the patient from the hospital but ultimately brought him back home, as per The Bridge Chronicle news report. Unfortunately, he passed away at home on December 30.
Following his death, around 6 relatives including three women arrived at the hospital accusing the doctors and medical staff of negligence. They claimed that the poor treatment led to the patient's death.
Even though the security personnel and hospital staff tried to control the situation, the relatives refused to listen and resorted to violence. They allegedly abused and physically assaulted the doctor, medical staff and even a female security staff.
Soon after, the relatives lifted wooden stools and damaged the glass panels of the electric room. This caused major chaos and ruckus at the hospital disrupting the environment and creating panic among patients.
The hospital management informed the police, who promptly arrived at the scene to de-escalate the situation. Senior police officials, including Assistant Police Commissioner Rahul Aware and Inspector Dashrath Patil, were part of the team who assessed the situation.
Later, the doctor who was allegedly assaulted by the kin filed a complaint at the police station. Based on this, the police registered a case under the Maharashtra Medical Services Act against six relatives and an investigation is underway.
