Doctors at KIMS Health perform carotid revascularization procedure to remove 10-cm-long occluded blockage
Thiruvananthapuram: A successful neuro-interventional procedure was performed on a 74-year-old man who had suffered a severe stroke, resulting in partial paralysis and loss of vision in his right eye.
The complex carotid revascularization procedure took place at KIMSHEALTH Thiruvananthapuram under the leadership of Dr Santhosh Joseph, Senior Consultant in the Department of Neurointerventional Radiology. The blood flow to the brain was restored using stents without surgery.

The elderly patient, a native of Thiruvananthapuram, had been receiving treatment at the OP for over a month due to weakness on the left side of his body. Within a month, the patient suffered another stroke, resulting in the loss of vision in his right eye. An MRI scan revealed a ten-centimetre-long blood clot obstructing the flow of blood to the brain.
Subsequent Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) provided a detailed view of a complete occlusion from the neck to the brain, necessitating an urgent procedure. During the three-hour-long procedure, a tube-shaped microcatheter was guided through the artery with the help of a Biplane DSA machine to remove the occluded blockage. Blood flow was restored by placing overlapping stents with the assistance of a guide wire.
Dr Manish Kumar Yadav, Consultant, and Dr Dinesh Babu, Associate Consultant, Department of Neuro Interventional Radiology, along with Dr Jayanth R Sheshan, Associate Consultant, Department of Neuro Anesthesia, were part of this complex procedure.
"Hypertension often leads to such a serious condition, and clots of this size are rarely reopened. The procedure was performed to prevent the risk of recurrent strokes and potential fatality. The highly skilled medical team and the state-of-the-art Biplane DSA machine were crucial in making the procedure a success," said Dr Santhosh Joseph. He added that the patient left the hospital fully recovered and was extremely satisfied to have successfully undergone this complex procedure.
