Expert panel to probe death of 6-year-old girl at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital

Pune- A five-member expert panel comprising doctors from Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) and BJ Medical College (BJMC) has been constituted to investigate the death of a six-year-old girl while undergoing treatment at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital (DMH), Pune.
Officials stated that the inquiry committee was formed on Wednesday and includes the Medical Superintendent of SGH and the heads of various departments, such as Medicine, Ophthalmology, Pediatrics, and Forensic Medicine.
According to the HT media report, Dr Yallappa Jadhav, Medical Superintendent of SGH, stated that the committee will examine the DMH report, past medical records, and the post-mortem report. Once the investigation is complete, the report will be submitted to the Alankar Police Station.
Earlier, as part of a parallel inquiry, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) constituted a five-member inquiry committee on May 22 to investigate the death of a six-year-old child. The committee was directed to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the child's death and submit a detailed report within seven days.
The panel submitted its report to the civic body on June 1, noting that certain essential tests, such as a chest X-ray, ECG, and 2D Echo, were not conducted before the surgery. Furthermore, the post-operative PT/INR and APTT test results suggest the possibility that the patient may have had an underlying bleeding disorder.
The panel members held detailed discussions with the medical specialists who treated the deceased patient. It was noted that the post-mortem report was not available. Therefore, the exact cause of death could not be ascertained," they stated in the report, reports HT.
PMC Assistant Health Chief Dr Suryakant Devkar stated that, based on the available medical records, the cause of death could not be definitively determined.
He stated that the post-mortem report from Sassoon General Hospital has not yet been received. The preliminary inquiry committee has recommended that further investigation be conducted by an expert committee under the supervision of the Superintendent of Sassoon General Hospital.
A minor girl underwent an eye-related surgical procedure at DMH and passed away on the very same day, May 18, following the surgery. The family alleged medical negligence during the course of treatment and demanded action against those responsible.
