Female patient dies after alleged sexual assault at Delhi Govt Hospital

New Delhi: A female patient, who was allegedly sexually assaulted by another patient at Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital, died during treatment at a different hospital in Northeast Delhi, a police officer said on Wednesday.

While the 23-year-old accused has already been arrested, further action will be taken after the post-mortem report comes, he said.

In a statement on Monday, the police had said that a female patient admitted at Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital in northeast Delhi was allegedly sexually assaulted by another patient admitted in the same ward, news agency PTI reported.

The incident was reported at the New Usmanpur police station, which registered a case.

According to an HT news report, the victim, in her 20s and lived alone in northeast Delhi, was admitted to Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital last week after neighbours found her unconscious. “Initial MLC stated she was unconscious and intoxicated. Further action depends on autopsy,” Ashish Mishra, DCP (northeast) said. On Monday, hospital staff alerted police that she had been assaulted by a male patient in the same ward.

The accused, identified as Mohammed Faiz, a resident of Kachchi Khajuri in Delhi, was arrested soon after, the statement said.

The woman was later referred for treatment at the GTB Hospital, where she died on Tuesday night.

“We are awaiting the post-mortem report to ascertain the exact reason behind her death. We will take further action after that,” the police officer said.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that a 15-year-old girl admitted for a leg operation in the orthopaedic ward of the Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial (LLRM) Medical College in Meerut was allegedly sexually assaulted by an attendant of another patient inside the woman's washroom on Sunday, police said.
