Fire at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Surgical ICU; patients evacuated

Thiruvananthapuram: A major fire broke out in the surgical trauma care unit of the Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College (GMC) on Tuesday, but no one was injured in the incident, hospital authorities said.
The fire broke out due to a short circuit in a ventilator in the surgical ICU, officials added.
No one was injured in the incident, they said, adding that patients have been evacuated from the surgical ICU on the first floor of the building, news agency PTI reported.
The blaze was reported, prompting the immediate evacuation of patients and others from the surgical ICU.

Family members of patients told the channels that there was a lot of smoke.
Thiruvananthapuram Corporation Mayor V V Rajesh reached the hospital and said that, according to information he received, the fire has been brought under control.
He also said that no one was injured in the incident and everyone was safe.
The mayor said all ventilators were also being inspected.
Fire force officials said that there was smoke, but the area has been ventilated.
Medical Dialogues recently reported that a major fire broke out at the Trauma Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Odisha's government-run SCB Medical College and Hospital in Bhubaneswar on Monday morning, claiming the lives of 10 people. Eleven hospital staff members suffered burn injuries while rescuing patients, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said. The chief minister, who rushed to the hospital, said that around 11 hospital staff members suffered burn injuries while rescuing patients to safety. Noting that there were 23 patients at the Trauma Care ICU and an adjacent ICU and ward, the chief minister said seven patients died in the fire, while three others succumbed to burns or suffocation during evacuation.
