GMC Jammu doctor performs first live kidney transplant in J&K
Jammu: The Government Medical College (GMC) has performed three successful live kidney transplants and earned the title of the first medical college in the UT of Jammu & Kashmir to do so.
The college has received praise from the public as well as many reputed individuals including Lt Governor Manoj Sinha tweeted by saying "GMC,#Jammu has become the first medical college in the UT to successfully perform #kidney transplant. Many congratulations to the team of doctors & nursing staff for this path-breaking achievement."
The transplantation process was performed on chronic kidney disease patients who were on dialysis. All the expenses of the surgery were covered under Ayushman Bharat Sehat Scheme.

The team of the doctors included Dr. Elias Sharma Head of the Department of Urology, Dr. Rahul Gupta from Urology, Dr. Anjali Mehta and Dr. Ashwani Kumar from Anaesthesia, and Dr. Mozzain Iqbal and Dr. Anchal Kotwal from the Urology Department, GMC Jammu, Dr. Shailesh Raina from Jaslok Hospital Mumbai and Dr. Santosh Kumar from CMC Vellore. Medical Superintendent and Deputy Medical Superintendent of Super Speciality Hospital (SSH) also supported the efforts.
The first case was performed on 30th April where the kidney of a mother was successfully transplanted to her 27-year-old son, a resident of Kishtwar. The second case happened on the same day where the kidney of a woman was transplanted to her 36-year-old daughter, a resident of Doda. The third case was done on May 1 where the kidney of a woman was transplanted to her 60-year-old husband, a resident of Jammu.

Following the surgery, the kidney donors were discharged on the 5th postoperative day and two of the three patients were discharged from the hospital yesterday and all three patients were under observation carefully by the doctors.
Principal GMC Jammu, Dr. Shashi Sudhan Sharma told Daily Excelsior "This is the first time that Kidney Transplant has been done in a Medical College in the UT and with this, the GMC Jammu has become one of the very few Medical Colleges in the country where Kidney Transplant is done."
In order to donate the organs after death, patients need to register with State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) J&K in Super Speciality Hospital Jammu.
