GMCH Associate Professor alleges workplace harassment, seeks inquiry

Gauhati Medical College and Hospital
Guwahati: In a shocking incident, an associate professor at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has written to Assam Chief Minister, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging workplace harassment and administrative obstruction, and requesting a fair inquiry into the matter.
According to the news reports, the woman doctor stated in her letter that after the establishment of the independent department she is associated with, the principal and chief superintendent of GMCH initially appreciated her efforts. However, she alleged that his behaviour later changed, with repeated insistence that she meet him in his office at the college building, despite there being opportunities to interact within the hospital premises.

She further alleged that during a later interaction, the principal made a remark suggesting she contact him when she was “absolutely free and alone,” which she described as inappropriate and unwelcome. She said she responded in a polite but dismissive manner and subsequently informed the Director of Medical Education about the distress the incidents had caused her, reports the Sentinel.
In her representation, the associate professor emphasised the need to safeguard professional ethics within medical institutions and to uphold the dignity and safety of women officers in the workplace.
