GMSH sector 16 to get new academic block for DNB students
Chandigarh: After the rejection of upgrading GMSH-16 to a medical college, Officials have announced on Friday that the UT health department has proposed to create a new academic block at the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16, for students taking Diplomate of National Board (DNB) courses.
The Diplomate of National Board (DNB) is a post-graduate degree, equivalent to an MD or MS degree, awarded to specialist doctors after completion of a three-year residency.
Dr. Suman Singh, director, health services, Chandigarh told HT "The said land is a part of the Educity project of the higher education department. Since our proposal of upgrading GMSH into a medical college was rejected, we wish to construct an academic block for DNB students, as the GMSH-16 campus does not have the required facilities for students of this course. So a detailed project plan had been submitted to the secretary, UT higher education, for approval."
It has requested the construction of DNB academic block, lecture theatre, auditorium, library, students hostel, guest house for the faculty members, and a shopping complex in the proposal.
"The GMSH-16 campus has limited rooms and hostels. For DNB students, we have converted one room into a smart class and conference hall. In the ongoing session, we got 30 female students, but we didn't have a hostel facility for them. So, they were adjusted in a nurses' hostel. The students require good infrastructure and we are expecting approvals soon," Dr. Singh added.

Earlier, the Medical dialogues Team had reported that the proposal of Chandigarh Administration for a second medical college i.e to upgrade Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH), Sector 16 had been rejected by the center. The decision was made on the grounds of the already existing medical college in Chandigarh.
In response to the proposal, the UT health secretary Yashpal Garg stated, "It has been rejected on the grounds that Chandigarh already has a medical college, and as per the policy, a district can only have one government medical college."
