HC grants bail to dismissed sub-inspector in Satara doctor suicide case

Kolhapur: The Kolhapur Bench of the Bombay High Court has granted bail to a dismissed Police Sub-Inspector accused of allegedly abetting the suicide of a 28-year-old government doctor in Satara district.
The incident traces back to October 23, 2025, when the government doctor was found dead in a hotel room. She had written a note on her left palm, reportedly accusing the PSI and another individual of physical and mental harassment.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that in a new development in the Maharashtra female doctor's alleged rape and suicide case in Satara district, police have arrested Sub-Inspector Gopal Badane, who surrendered at the Phaltan Police Station.
In its bail order dated April 1, 2026, the court noted that the investigation was complete and the charge sheet had been filed. However, it was observed that the trial could be prolonged due to the large number of witnesses the prosecution intends to examine. The bench also highlighted that, aside from the suicide note implicating the accused, there were no specific details regarding the alleged incident or its timing. Since the accused and the deceased were known to have been in a personal relationship, the court stated that any physical relations between them could not be assumed prima facie to be non-consensual.
“Nevertheless, the investigation is complete for all intents and purpose and the charge-sheet is filed to that effect. Having regard to the number of witnesses which the prosecution proposes to examine, the trial is unlikely to commence and conclude within a reasonable period. So far as the apprehension expressed by the learned APP is concerned, the same can be adequately taken care of by imposing stringent conditions,” the Kolhapur Bench of Bombay High Court mentioned, reports the Hindu.
The accused was granted bail on a Rs 50,000 bond, with one or two local solvent sureties. The case is registered with Phaltan Police Station in Satara district under Sections 64(2)(m) (situations where an act may not amount to an offence) and 108 (abetment) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The bail order includes conditions that the accused must not influence prosecution witnesses or tamper with evidence, and that he attend all court hearings.
In his bail application, the accused contended that he was falsely implicated and had interacted with the victim only in the course of his official duties. The court noted that alleged chats between the accused and the doctor predated the incident, indicating a prior context to their communications.
