Human rights panel seeks action on independent haematology department at Kozhikode Medical College

Kozhikode: An independent Department of Haematology at Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Kozhikode, could soon become a reality, with the Kerala State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) directing the State government to examine the project outline submitted by the authorities.
According to the news reports, in a recent order, Commission judicial member K. Baijunath directed the Additional Chief Secretary (Health) and the Director of Medical Education to complete the necessary formalities related to basic infrastructure and approval for fund allocation.

The authorities have been asked to submit a detailed report on the present status of the project outline and the follow-up measures planned for its implementation. They have also been directed to submit an action-taken report within three months.
The order came following a petition filed by Kareem Karassery, a social activist and president of the Blood Patients’ Protection Council, Kerala. At present, haematology services at the medical college are functioning as an extension of the General Medicine Department.
Meanwhile, the Commission also asked the authorities to chalk out an action plan for the development of the hospital in view of the high number of patients and the limited infrastructure available there, reports the Hindu.
The SHRC called for the establishment of additional wards and beds, along with the provision of necessary medical equipment. It also emphasised the need to ensure adequate availability of doctors, nurses and allied healthcare professionals.
The Commission further directed that treatment of patients on hospital floors should be avoided and called for a scientific referral system by coordinating with other government hospitals.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that the proposed appointment of a faculty member accused of mentally harassing postgraduate (PG) medical students as the acting Head of the Department (HoD) of Psychiatry at Government Medical College (GMC), Kozhikode, has drawn opposition from the students’ union, which has urged the authorities to reconsider the move.
