Isolation wards to come up at Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode medical colleges
Thiruvananthapuram: Promising a time-bound completion, the Kerala Health Minister Veena George announced the work on the modern isolation blocks in the Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode Medical Colleges would be finished quickly on time.
The minister stated that Rs 34.74 crore and Rs 34.92 crore have been sanctioned by the administration for Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode Medical Colleges, respectively which would be given by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), a government body responsible for mobilizing funds for infrastructural projects.

With an aim to provide proper care for patients suffering from infectious diseases, the cabinet, in its last meeting, had given its assent to the setting up of the isolation wards in the medical colleges and had subsequently sanctioned the required amount. The minister pointed out that this initiative would also act as a precautionary measure to deal with pandemics like Covid and other infectious diseases.
Coming up in a 3,500 sq ft four-storey building, the isolation ward at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College is set to have 50 beds, which would also have an OP wing, wards, isolation units and consultation rooms. The ground floor of the facility is set to have a reception, swab test facility, laboratory, waiting area, consultation room, X-Ray, procedure room and pharmacy.
In addition to the nursing staff room and doctors’ lounge, the first floor would have a seminar room, bystanders’ area, waiting area, nurse station and isolation room. An isolation room, isolation ward and procedure room would come up on the second and third floors, reports TNIE.
Built on a total area of 3,600 sq ft in a three-storey building, the isolation block in Kozhikode Medical College would have 40 beds. There would be a reception, bystander waiting area, pre and post-sampling area, pharmacy, consultation room, nurses station, procedure room and screening room on the ground floor. An isolation room, isolation ward, bystander waiting area, nurses station procedure room and doctors’ lounge are set to come up on the first floor, and the second floor would have isolation rooms, isolation wards and procedure rooms.
Speaking about the state government's plan to set up isolation wards, the health minister said, "The state government has decided to set up isolation blocks across the 140 assembly constituencies. The isolation blocks would have 10 beds each. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated 10 isolation wards recently."
